Dr. Woods received his B.Sc.(Honors) in Engineering Chemistry in 1985
and his Ph.D. in 1990 in Computational and Synthetic Carbohydrate Chemistry,
both from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada. He joined the CCRC
in January 1995 with a primary academic appointment in the Department
of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He holds an adjunct appointment
in the Department of Chemistry and mentors graduate students from both departments.
Dr Woods teaches a senior undergraduate course in Physical Chemistry, graduate courses
in Glycobiology and Biochemistry and a Biomolecular Simulations laboratory course.
The Woods group employs computational and experimental techniques
in the study of carbohydrate-protein interactions. Development and application of the GLYCAM
force field forms a core research area that is augmented by the application of x-ray diffraction,
NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric methods. The CCRC houses superb computational
and experimental facilities in a custom designed research environment. Dr. Woods is a senior
investigator on an Integrated Glycotechnology project funded by the National Institutes of Health
Resource Center for Biomedical Complex Carbohydrates.
